Renewable Energy
Renewable energy applications encompass technologies that generate power from sustainable sources, including solar, wind, and others and often also store that energy within battery storage systems for use when needed. Highly efficient power conversion is critical within these systems. GCi has developed, manufactured and supplied critical and highly efficient magnetic components for use in applications
-
DC to AC (Inverters)
The most critical conversion, turning variable DC from solar PV cells into standard 120V/240V AC power for home use. -
DC to DC (Power Optimizers/Charge Controllers)
These devices adjust voltage and current to maximize efficiency at the panel level (optimization) or to safely charge battery storage systems. -
AC to DC (Battery Charging)
When taking power from the grid to charge a battery, the inverter acts as a rectifier to convert AC back to DC.
Battery storage systems require bidirectional power conversion, primarily handled by a Power Conversion System (PCS) or inverter to manage energy flow between DC-based batteries and AC-based grids/loads. The system converts AC to DC for charging and DC to AC for discharging, managing frequency and voltage regulation. Key power conversion within Energy Storage and BMS systems where you can find GCi solutions are:
-
Bidirectional AC/DC Conversion (Inverter/Rectifier)
The core function converts 3-phase or single-phase AC grid power to DC for battery storage, and back to AC to power homes, businesses, or feed the grid. -
DC/DC Conversion (Boost/Buck Converters)
Often used to match the variable DC voltage of the battery bank to a fixed DC bus voltage, optimizing charging efficiency and managing battery state-of-charge. -
Voltage Isolation (Isolation Transformers)
Providing electrical (galvanic) separation between an AC power source and powered equipment, enhancing safety and reducing noise.
